What makes a Vogue word?

Pretty much the same forces that create vogues in clothes, hobbies, dances, entertainment. Someone influential displays it, Madison Avenue runs the word up a flagpole and everybody who's anybody salutes it.

Such words, we feel, are not merely passing fancies. Most of them are viable because when used discriminatingly they often offer us a shortcut in communication. They are able to express in one word what might often have taken three or more words to express as forcefully. They contribute a little something that wasn't in the word or words they replace.
