Little Things: Poem


Little Drop of water
Little grains of sand
Makes the mighty ocean
And the pleasant land

So the little moments,
Humble though they be,
Make the mighty ages
Of eternity.

Thus our little errors,
Lead the soul away
From the path of virtue
Far in sin to stray.

Little Deeds of Kindness
Little words of love,
Help to make earth happy,
Like the heaven above.

Theme and Overview:


The poem "Little Things" written by "Julia A.F. Carney" is a simple poem written in four stanzas. Although the poem seems to be simple, the message it conveys in quite big. In the poem, the poetess asserts the values and importance of all those things which are small for us, and we generally don't give much importance to them. Poetess also wants to say those small things are much more important than many big things and without giving much importance to them we just wait for something big. And these small things also affect our lives to a large extent that we expect and how sneakily these small things can change our life, we can't even imagine it. So, poetess wants to say that small things play a vital role in our life and with the help of these little things we can achieve massive achievements in our life.

Poem Explanation:


From: Little Drops............pleasant land.
The poem starts with lines in which the poetess says that the little drops of water and the little grains of sand which are nothing individually but when comes in the collection they become responsible for the formation of huge landmasses and endless oceans. So, it is drops of water and grains of sand which seems nothing to us are actually responsible for our existence. 
From: So the...................... Eternity.
Now in next stanza, the poetess says that besides waiting for huge celebrations enjoy every little moment of life because at the end these small moments can give you huge happiness. These small moments of happiness and joy have their importance in our life. And the only thing that decides how happy you were throughout the year is how efficiently you enjoyed your every single moment of your life.

Now, in the next stanza, again pointing the values of small things and proving how small things can change our life, the poetess says that every big crime starts from a small crime and however, the small these crimes or our errors maybe but sometimes lead us to the sin from the path of virtue. In short, sometimes our small lapse can create a huge difference in our lives and sometimes our tiny errors have so much power to change our entire life.

Now in the last stanza, poetess says that our little acts of kindness and little words of love can even change a whole person, sometimes these small words of love turn anger to love and changes hate to love. These small act of kindness helps to establish a peaceful environment on the earth and with this peaceful and loving environment, the earth will appear like heaven. Means, our small acts of kindness and small words of love can make our earth like heaven.
